Protecting Campers – A Mid-Summer Abuse Prevention Refresh
July 26, 2025 1 minute read

As we enter the second half of the summer, here’s some encouraging news: while a few reports of inappropriate behavior have surfaced, early recognition and reporting by campers and staff have led to timely interventions. This speaks volumes about your team’s commitment to strong abuse prevention practices and the effectiveness of your training efforts—thank you.

That said, abuse prevention remains a critical priority. As routines settle and familiarity grows, it’s essential to stay vigilant and reinforce the basics that protect campers and staff alike.

Abuse often occurs when an individual has access, privacy, and control. That’s why prevention policies focus on transparency, accountability, and respect. Here are three key reminders to help your staff maintain a strong culture of safety:

  • Avoid 1-on-1 Situations: All interactions with campers should be observable and interruptible. Staff should avoid being alone with a camper out of sight or sound of others. This simple practice helps limit opportunities for private, unsupervised interactions.
  • Enforce Boundaries: A safe camp culture depends on clear verbal and physical boundaries. Encourage staff and campers to speak up when boundaries are crossed and to support one another in maintaining respectful interactions. Boundaries protect everyone and help prevent unhealthy dynamics.
  • No Secrets: Secrecy creates space for abuse to thrive. While surprises (like birthday celebrations or special events) are part of the fun, there’s no place for secrets at camp. Reinforce the message that open communication is key to safety and trust.

Let’s keep up the great work!
