There is a moment at the end of every summer season when camp becomes still.
A gentle breeze moves through the trees. Squirrels begin to reclaim their territory. A songbird returns, its call no longer drowned out by the laughter, cheers, and energy of a busy camp season. The campers have all been picked up. The final staff dinner has ended, filled with celebrations, stories, and a few laughs about the memorable and unexpected moments along the way. Camp has been cleaned, the maintenance team has signed off for a few well-earned days of rest, and even the food truck has made its last trip down the road.
In the blink of an eye, summer is over.
As the familiar sounds of camp fade, a quiet stillness settles in. For camp leaders, it offers a rare opportunity to slow down, breathe deeply, and reflect. Maybe that moment comes while sitting on your favorite porch or taking an evening walk to watch the sunset from a nearby lookout point.
This time isn't about reviewing incident reports or completing staff evaluations. There will be time for that. The post-summer work will come soon enough: inventories to update, equipment and supplies to account for, budgets to reconcile, maintenance projects to prioritize, and lessons learned to document. Planning meetings, board reports, recruitment efforts, and preparations for 2027 are already visible on the horizon.
All of those responsibilities matter. But not right now.
This moment is different.
It is an opportunity to pause and recognize what you and your team accomplished. To celebrate the successes. To remember the countless smiles, friendships, and moments of growth that took place over the past few months. Whether you're driving out of camp for the season or walking across the field toward home, take a moment to appreciate the impact of your work.
Being a camp leader in 2026 is no easy task. There are more demands on your time, more expectations to meet, and more leadership required than ever before. The pace rarely slows, and the list of responsibilities never seems to shrink.
Before long, schedules will fill, planning conversations will resume, and preparations for another summer will begin. But before the next season of work takes shape, enjoy the quiet.
Take pride in what you and your team accomplished this summer. The facilities may be empty, but the impact remains. Lives were changed. Memories were created. Skills were developed. Communities were strengthened.
That is the real measure of a successful summer.
