Camp Van Safety: Keeping the Summer Rolling Smoothly!
June 25, 2025 3 minute read

Summer is almost here, and that means it’s time to dust off the canoes, stock up on s’mores, and—yes—get those 12–15 passenger vans ready for action. Whether you're heading to the lake, the trailhead, or the nearest ice cream stand, safe transportation is just as important as sunscreen and first aid kits.

If your staff will be behind the wheel this summer, here’s a quick refresher to keep everyone safe and smiling from campfire to campfire.

Big Vans, Big Responsibility
Driving a 12–15 passenger van isn’t like cruising around in a minivan. These big campers-on-wheels have quirks that can catch even confident drivers off guard. Here’s what your staff needs to know:

Watch Those Blind Spots!
The biggest blind spot? Right behind the van. That’s why so many summer fender-benders involve backing into trees, fences, or—yikes—canoe racks. Always use a spotter, mirrors, and backup cameras if available.

Braking Takes a Beat
These vans are heavy, especially when packed with campers and gear. That means longer stopping distances. Encourage drivers to slow down, stay alert, and leave plenty of space.

Load Like a Pro
When loading up, start from the front and work your way back. This keeps the van balanced and reduces the risk of rollovers. And yes, that means no letting campers rush to the “cool seats” in the back first!

Check Those Tires
Under-inflated tires are a top cause of van accidents. Make tire checks part of your daily routine—right up there with headcounts and sunscreen reminders.

Ditch the Distractions
Phones should be out of reach, playlists set before departure, and directions locked in. A focused driver is a safe driver—and that means more time for camp songs and less time for roadside drama.

Make Safety Part of Camp Culture
Nothing beats hands-on practice before the campers arrive, especially into tricky parking spots at camp or in town. Need a knowledge check? Try our quiz and discussion outline to spot check knowledge. With a little prep and a lot of teamwork, your staff can keep the summer rolling safely and smoothly. Because nothing should stand between your campers and the best summer ever—not even a tricky 3-point turn.
