We have reached the heart of summer! At this point, camps are alive with laughter, adventure, traditions, and anticipation of end of season events. While it’s a time to reflect on all that’s been accomplished, it’s also a critical moment to recommit to the policies and procedures that keep our communities safe and thriving.
By now, your staff have found their rhythm. With that comfort, however, can come a tendency toward shortcuts or relaxed supervision. The insurance industry consistently notes a rise in incidents later in the season, often due to increased risk-taking or complacency in familiar routines.
Let’s celebrate the growth and confidence your staff have developed—and remind them that consistency and vigilance are just as important now as they were on Day One. Here are three key reminders to help your team finish strong:
1. Be the Role Model Campers Need: From respectful conversations to personal hygiene, staff set the tone for camp culture. Campers still need structure, energy, and accountability from staff to thrive in the camp setting.
2. Revisit Cabin Contracts or Codes of Conduct: Most camps establish group norms at the start of a session. Now’s a great time to check in: Are those agreements still being followed? Do they need to be refreshed or adjusted? A quick reset can go a long way in maintaining a positive group dynamic.
3. Avoid Activity Drift: Creativity is welcome – but always within the boundaries of safety and structure. Leadership should approve any changes to activities to avoid unintended risks.
Let’s make the second half of the summer as magical – and safe – as the first!
