Choosing the Best Driver
April 1, 2024 3 minute read

Not all drivers are the same and not all driving jobs are created equal. Having a driver selection process that recognizes this will help your camp adapt to the demands of the role.

Minimum Recommendations for All Drivers:
  • Valid driver's license
  • Minimum age of 21*
  • 3 years driving experience
  •  Motor Vehicle Check (MVR) checked annually or after a break of service of 90 days – recommend the MVR reviews 3-years of driving records
  • Have a score of 13 or less on the Driver Selection Form**
  • Have successfully completed a driver training for the vehicle(s) they will be driving and a test/final skills verification on all vehicle(s) being driven

*Age recommendations: Camps may create policies in which specific drivers may be under 21. For example, maintenance staff 18 and older may be approved to drive specific vehicles but may not transport participants.

** A note about the Driver Selection Form: Just because an individual is 21 and has a clean MVR doesn’t necessarily mean that they will be a good driver for your organization. Many drivers look good on paper but are not the most qualified. The Driver Selection Form can help your program identify which adults in your program will be more qualified to drive. Adults who “rank” better on this form may be a better choice for longer or more difficult driving situations.

Creating a Progression and Document

Drivers should be approved to drive each type of vehicle that your program operates. Some drivers may be approved to only drive a maintenance vehicle on-site, while others may be approved to drive a 15-passenger van. If your program owns multiple vehicles, for multiple uses, clearly define and track who is qualified to drive which vehicle.
